In Their Own Words

Experiences, in other people's words.

If you are scared and wondering whether anyone has been through this before you, these are the words of people who have.

“I was seen by this little lady in a way that I have not been seen by anyone in a very long time.”

“She talked to me in a way that resonated with my spirit and developmental character. She spoke to my new way of being and showed me how to articulate that to the Board despite my nerves being unstable for what was at stake.”

“She held nothing back. She spoke fast and I got lost a few times, but when I asked her to run it back she did. … I did not feel judged or overly criticized by her.”

“She gave me homework to do, showed me how to maximize my strengths, and not shy away from my weaknesses, but to own them. … She helped me to see my commitment through and held me accountable when I wanted to minimize my role in the crime I committed by entertaining self-defense.”

The representation by Attorney Lori Kelley at the Board of Prison Hearing was phenomenal. This is not because I was found suitable, this is because she talked to me in a way that resonated with my spirit and developmental character. She spoke to my new way of being and showed me how to articulate that to the Board despite my nerves being unstable for what was at stake. She knew where I came from and put the conversation in words relative to that, so that I would not miss picking up what she was putting down.

Mrs. Kelley made me feel like a friend, and I still feel this way. All while remaining professional, she gave knowledge to me raw. I needed to hear the things she said in the way that she said them. I explained to her that I felt marginalized, disparaged, and targeted. She explained to me that I absolutely was all that, but that I did not have to paint myself into that shadow of an existence. She held nothing back. She spoke fast and I got lost a few times, but when I asked her to run it back she did, and expounded on it in a way that I absorbed what the point made. I valued that I was valued and understood based on my cultural background. Mrs. Kelley took into consideration that the systemic measures placed against my community made me collateral damage relative to the sovereignty of the state. I was very confident that she understood why I went the way I did in life and could relate to the struggles I faced growing up in an urban area with liquor stores on almost every corner and drug houses in between.

Mrs. Kelley took the fact that I am Muslim into account so well that she took it and turned it into a strong-suit for me. The fact that I fast at least once a year, she pointed out, is a self-control measure to check impulsivity. On multiple occasions she reframed my spirituality in a way that could be articulated as strength. And I appreciated her inclusivity and it made me relax, and I trust her. I did not feel judged or overly criticized by her.

Mrs. Kelley sees me for who I am and told me about myself throughout my developmental stages in life. I knew I could be candid with her as she set the stage for the tone in our interactions. She was all the way real with me and did not bite her tongue in delivering the truth about civil rights, spiritually, and the points the Board will be looking for.

Would I recommend Mrs. Kelley to someone in my community? I would love to have Mrs. Kelley on retainer for all of my family and community. No question. Mrs. Kelley made me feel like she had my back. She went to bat for me when the Deputy District Attorney tried to use a Habeas Corpus I filed against me. Surprised the hell out of me the power, the vigor, and the force she exuded in my defense. For a second I thought she was in the “Hot Seat”. She saw that using the habeas corpus as a reason to deny me would only exacerbate a due process violation. I could not have made a better argument. This made me feel fully supported, understood, represented, and valued by her. She could not have done a better job. I think she could do much more with her skills, such as running her very own law firm or boot camp for attorneys. Her representation was like a hug from a mother or big sister is how I feel about what took place. I did not feel like she was being a boilerplate kind of lawyer, but deep passion, determination, and strength resonated in her advocating for me. Mrs. Kelley is down to earth, diverse in her abilities and understanding of cultural backgrounds and it shows. The biggest impact of Lori representing me was her authenticity and raw way of being. She gave me homework to do, showed me how to maximize my strengths, and not shy away from my weaknesses, but to own them. Her insight was very impactful because I was seen by this little lady in a way that I have not been seen by anyone in a very long time. I felt validated and protected. This Attorney is awesome because she knows her stuff and loves what she does. She set me up right and helped me to see my commitment through and held me accountable when I wanted to minimize my role in the crime I committed by entertaining self-defense. I appreciate you Lori. Thank you for being you!

Love and Supreme Respect, Tyun D.

“Ms. Kelley showed me that accountability and compassion are not opposites.”

“She did not simply tell me what I wanted to hear or try to make things easier for me. Instead, she challenged me to confront areas of denial and take an honest look at the choices, behaviors, and thinking patterns that contributed to my past.”

“For many years, I struggled with anxiety, particularly when placed under pressure to answer difficult questions. … She helped me understand that recognizing my anxiety was not an excuse for my behavior, but an important part of understanding myself and learning how to manage it responsibly.”

“Ms. Kelley did not prepare me by giving me a script or telling me what I should say. She prepared me by helping me understand my own story well enough that I could stand before the Board and speak honestly, confidently, and in my own words.”

Most Helpful: Accountability, Preparation, and Personalized Advocacy

What stands out most about my experience working with Ms. Lori Kelley was the combination of her professionalism, thorough preparation, direct communication, and genuine commitment to holding me accountable. In my case, the firm and direct manner in which she handled my hearings was both appropriate and extremely beneficial. She did not simply tell me what I wanted to hear or try to make things easier for me. Instead, she challenged me to confront areas of denial and take an honest look at the choices, behaviors, and thinking patterns that contributed to my past.

Ms. Kelley’s preparation was exceptional. She provided clear guidance and practical tools that helped me understand what I needed to examine within myself and prepare for the difficult questions I might face. One of the most valuable resources she provided was a thorough explanation of the distinctions between character defects, core beliefs, feelings, and related areas of personal accountability. This helped me take a much deeper and more honest look at myself. It guided me in identifying character defects, including greed, that were present when I committed my crime and helped me better understand how my thinking, emotions, and choices contributed to my past behavior.

What I appreciated most was that Ms. Kelley’s preparation allowed me to speak honestly and authentically about my experiences. Her guidance helped me understand my own story, take responsibility for my choices, and develop the confidence to express myself in my own words. This was extremely important to me because I wanted the Board to hear my genuine understanding, accountability, and personal growth—not a rehearsed response.

The process did much more for me than simply prepare me for a hearing. It helped me understand myself, my choices, and my risk factors on a much deeper level. I began recognizing patterns in my thinking and behavior that I had not previously understood. Rather than simply preparing answers for the Board, Ms. Kelley helped me develop the self-awareness necessary to honestly explain where I had been, what I had learned, and who I had worked to become.

Another significant area where Ms. Kelley’s advocacy made a difference was helping me address my anxiety. For many years, I struggled with anxiety, particularly when placed under pressure to answer difficult questions. During previous hearings, I could become overwhelmed, lose my train of thought, and unintentionally come across to commissioners as though I was avoiding a question or unwilling to answer it. I was concerned that acknowledging my anxiety might be interpreted as making excuses for my past conduct.

Ms. Kelley’s calm, patient, and understanding nature gave me the confidence to finally acknowledge this issue openly. She helped me understand that recognizing my anxiety was not an excuse for my behavior, but an important part of understanding myself and learning how to manage it responsibly. Her guidance helped me come out of my shell and become more comfortable speaking about something that, for many years, had held me captive in my own mind.

I also appreciated that I was heard and included in the decisions concerning my representation. Ms. Kelley communicated with me clearly, listened to my concerns, and helped me understand the reasoning behind the preparation process. At the same time, she never lost sight of the importance of accountability. That balance between strong advocacy and personal responsibility was one of the most valuable aspects of working with her.

What impressed me most was that Ms. Kelley did not approach my case as simply another hearing or another file. She took the time to understand the person behind the case and helped me better understand myself. She prepared me to stand before the Board with greater confidence, honesty, and self-awareness while still allowing my own voice and my own truth to come through.

One of the most meaningful aspects of my experience with Ms. Kelley is that the principles I learned from working with her have continued to influence me in my own professional life. Today, as a Substance Use Disorder Counselor and Domestic Violence Facilitator, I work with individuals who are also being asked to confront denial, take responsibility for their choices, and make meaningful changes in their lives. I find myself applying many of the principles I learned from Ms. Kelley’s approach— particularly the importance of holding people accountable while treating them with dignity, patience, understanding, and compassion.

Ms. Kelley showed me that accountability and compassion are not opposites. A person can be challenged to take complete responsibility for their actions while still being treated with respect and given the opportunity to grow. That is a principle I now carry into my own work with clients. In that sense, her influence extended beyond helping me prepare for my own hearing; she helped reinforce values that I now try to bring into my work when helping others navigate their own path toward change.

What I Would Tell Someone Considering Lori Kelley Law

Ms. Kelley did not prepare me by giving me a script or telling me what I should say. Her combination of knowledge, preparation, professionalism, patience, compassion, and accountability made a profound difference in my experience. I am sincerely grateful for the dedication and commitment she brought to my case.

Ms. Kelley’s advocacy went beyond simply representing me. She helped me become better prepared, more self-aware, and more capable of communicating who I have worked to become.
